Vmware software FCoE adapter storage connections fail when LUNs are presented to the host on different VLANs

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
When the storage configuration includes LUNs presented on more than one VLAN to hosts with software FCoE adapters, you experience these symptoms:

• In the /var/log/vmkernel.log file, you see entries similar to:
  
  <MM-DD-YY>T<time>.363Z cpu2:4616)<6>host2: fip: fcoe_ctlr_vlan_request() is done
  </time><MM-DD-YY>T<time>.365Z cpu0:4606)<6>host2: fip: host2: FIP VLAN ID unavail. Retry VLAN discovery.</time>
<MM-DD-YY>T<time>.365Z cpu0:4606)<6>host2: fip: fcoe_ctlr_vlan_request() is done</time>
<MM-DD-YY>T<time>.366Z cpu2:4622)<6>host2: fip: host2: FIP VLAN ID unavail. Retry VLAN discovery.

  Note: The preceding log excerpts are only examples. Date, time, and environmental variables may vary depending on your environment.
  
  

• The entries in the /var/log/vmkernel.log file indicate that:

• A VLAN id is not available
• VLAN discovery will be retried

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.5
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting VMware ESXi 5.x and 6.x. Currently, there is no resolution.

Note: VMware does not support multiple VLANs for storage connections to software FCoE adapters with FCF (Fibre Channel Forwarder) solicitation.

To work around this issue, change the storage networking configuration to use one VLAN ID for all Fibre Channel Forwarders (software FCoE adapters).
