This article provides steps to access the vSphere or Workstation environment to determine the VMware product hosting the Linux virtual machine. You may want to use this method if you do not have access to the vSphere or Workstation environment.

Environment

  • VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0
  • VMware vSphere ESXi 6.5
  • VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0
  • VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5
  • VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1

Resolution

To determine the hosting platform for a Linux virtual machine:
  1. Run this command in Linux virtual machine:

    /usr/lib/vmware-tools/sbin/vmware-checkvm -p
  2. You see the output:

    ESX Server or VMware workstation
