Issue/Introduction

  • Cannot enable a transparent mode of load balancer in edge service gateway.
  • You see an error similar to:

Unable to enable Transparent Mode for Edge Gateway VCD-ESG due to lack of free floating IPs in service network 192.168.2.254/24.

  • This load balancer is created in the older versions and vCD is upgraded to the later versions supporting this "transparent mode" feature.
  • From NSX-T GUI, DHCP range of the segment for this service network covers all IP addresses (such as 192.168.2.1-192.168.2.253) without the specified gateway address.

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.x

Cause

The transparent mode feature was introduced in Cloud Director 10.4.1. This feature requires Cloud Director to reserve 5 IP addresses for the AVI load balancer. However edge gateways created prior to Cloud Director 10.4.1 the DHCP Range is fully consumed this prevents Cloud Director from reserving the required IP addresses.

Resolution

In order to resolve the issue, kindly try either of below options:

  1. Decrease the DHCP IP range in nsxt.

nsxt ui -> segments -> edit the segment for edge gateway -> edit dhcp config -> edit dhcp range and reduce the range by at least 5 IP addresses

  2. Disable and enable the Load Balancer setting

vcd ui -> edge gateway -> Load Balancer -> General Settings -> Edit -> Active -> disable the toggle, then enable it back.

Note: Disabling / Enabling the load balancer will remove all virtual services created on the Load Balancer.

Additional Information
