Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • You are unable to power on a virtual machine that is within an Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC) cluster.
  • Attempting to power on a virtual machine in an EVC cluster fails.
  • You see the error:

virtualized performance counters are not supported within an EVC cluster

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 6.7.x
VMware vCenter Server 6.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 6.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x

Cause

This issue occurs when virtual CPU performance counters are enabled on a virtual machine within an EVC enabled cluster.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, disable virtual CPU performance counters on the affected virtual machine.

To disable virtual CPU performance counters:
  1. Log in to the vSphere Web Client.
Note: This setting is only available in the vSphere Web Client.
  1. Right-click the affected virtual machine and click Edit Settings.
    1. To locate a virtual machine, select a data center, folder, cluster, resource pool, host, or vApp
    2. Click the Related Objects tab and click Virtual Machines.
  2. On the Virtual Hardware tab, expand CPU and disable virtualized performance counters.
  3. Click OK.
Once you confirmed VM able to power-on the VM in the EVC cluster, only then do power-off the VM and set the CPU performance counters again.
