Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • When an ESXi host is entering into the Maintenance Mode the vSphere Client reports the warning:

The requested operation may cause the cluster to violate its configured failover level for high availability. Are you sure you want to do this?

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.1.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 4.1.x

Cause

This issue is by design and occurs if the cluster is HA enabled and the configured failover capacity is greater than or equal to the current configured failover level for the cluster.

Placing an ESXi host in maintenance mode in a two ESXi host cluster reduces the number of available hosts in HA to the same as, or below, the configured limit.

Note: This message occurs even when Admission Control is disabled.

Resolution

This is an informational message alerting the user that failover capacity may not be available when ESXi host is in Maintenance mode.
