Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • A task initiated from the vSphere client to remove a Distributed Port Group or a Distributed Switch fails.
  • You see the error:

DVPortgroup dvPortGroupName port portNumber is in use

Environment

VMware ESXi 4.0.x Embedded
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Embedded
VMware ESXi 4.0.x Installable
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Installable

Cause

The issue occurs if at least one of the ports of a Port group is in use.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, before removing a Distributed Port Group, verify that:
  • All virtual machines connected to the corresponding labeled network are migrated to a
    different labeled network.
  • All VMkernel adapters connected to the distributed port group are migrated to a different
    port group, or are deleted.
You can safely remove the Distributed Port Group after all the ports connected to the Port Group are migrated to a different labeled network.

For more information, see the Setting Up Networking with vSphere Distributed Switches section in the vSphere Networking Guide.

Note: Before attempting to remove a Distributed Switch, you must migrate all virtual machine, VMkernel networking to another Distributed Switch or a Standard switch. For more information see, Disabling vNetwork Distributed Switches (1010718).
