Environment

VMware vCenter Server 6.5.x
VMware vSphere Update Manager 6.5.x

Cause

This issue occurs due to special characters in the users password.

For example, there may be a semicolon  or similar special characters in the password of the account which is used to install update manager. The semicolon is used as a separator when processed by the vciInstallUtils.exe command.

Other problematic characters maybe non ASCII or:
  • ~ tilde
  • ^ caret
  • \ backslash

Resolution

Currently, there is no resolution.

Workaround:
To workaround this issue, remove the semicolon or special characters from the password of the account which is used to install the update manager.
