Provisioning a machine in VMware vRealize Automation fails with the error: Error has been caught, see event logs located on the vCAC server for detail

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Cannot provision machines in VMware vRealize Automation (formerly known as vCloud Automation Center)
  • Provisioning machines in VMware vRealize Automation fail
  • In the Confirm Machine Request page, you see the error:

    Application Error: Error has been caught, see event logs located on the vCAC server for detail or contact your system administrator for more information.

  • In the Web_Admin_All.log file, located at \Program Files (x86)\VMware\vCAC\Server\Website\Logs\, you see entries similar to:

    System.Web.HttpUnhandledException (0x80004005): Exception of type 'System.Web.HttpUnhandledException' was thrown. ---> System.Data.Services.Client.DataServiceClientException: Error processing response stream. Server failed with following message:

    An error occurred while processing this request.

    at System.Data.Services.Client.Xml.XmlAtomErrorReader.Read()


Environment

VMware vCloud Automation Center for Server 5.1.x
VMware vCloud Automation Center for Server 5.2.x

Cause

This issue occurs if there are Compute Resources that do not contain a Resource Reservation, but have a Location assigned.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting VMware vRealize Automation (formerly known as vCloud Automation Center) 5.1 and 5.2.

A resolution for this issue is being evaluated for inclusion in a future release.

To work around this issue, remove the Location for all Compute Resources that do not contain Resource Reservations.
