Issue/Introduction

This article provides steps to configure the data retention metrics for FSDB in vRealize Operations (formerly known as vCenter Operations).

Environment

VMware vCenter Operations Manager vCenter Operations Manager (Standalone) 5.x
VMware vCenter Operations Enterprise 1.0.x
VMware vCenter Operations Standard 1.0.x

Resolution

vRealize Operations is configured for different retention periods and cleaning cycles for metric data in the FSDB.
In vRealize Operations Manager Standard, the default retention period is 180 days and the default cleaning frequency is 7 days.

In
vRealize Operations Manager Enterprise, the default retention period is 900 days and the cleaning frequency is not configured.

Note: Since the FSDB is maintained in a per resource and per monthly file, all metrics are kept for a particular month, even if you specify a certain number of days. For example, even when the frequency is set to 45 days, you still have data up to 2 months.

To change the default parameters:
  1. Open the Analytics advanced.properties file using a text editor on the Analytics VM. This file is located at:
    • In windows – %ALIVE_BASE%\user\conf\analytics\advanced.properties
    • In Linux – $ALIVE_BASE/user/conf/analytics/advanced.properties

  2. Edit these parameters:

    #Old Data Cleaner Execution frequency. Default is 0(Off) days
    oldDataCleanerExecutionFrequency=7
    #old date range. Default is 900 days
    oldDataCleanerDateRange=180
  3. Restart the Analytics service. For more information, see Starting and stopping VMware Alive Enterprise 7.2 and VMware vRealize Operations Enterprise 1.0 services (1034903).

Impact/Risks:
vRealize Operations data retention should be configured according to the amount of resources and the cyclic needs for data patterns. The system analyzes and learns the normal behavior when allowed to use long histories of data. This allows the system to learn weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly patterns. For example, to learn the normal behavior for quarterly patterns, the system requires 120 days retention. Storage grows quickly with the number of resources configured in the system. The FSDB can become corrupted if the storage space is exhausted.
