Unable to open a virtual machine console using the vSphere Web client in VMware vCenter Server 5.5 update 2

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Unable to open a virtual machine console using the vSphere Web Client in vCenter Server 5.5 update 2.
• You see the error:
  
  can't establish a secure connection to the server
  
  

Environment

VMware vSphere Web Client 5.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x

Cause

In versions of vCenter Server 5.5 prior to vCenter Server 5.5 Update 2, when the HTML5 remote console for virtual machines is launched, it uses connections like http:// and web sockets like ws:// instead of secure connections like https:// and wss://.

vCenter Server 5.5 Update 2 addresses this by using a secure connection over port 7343, instead of a connection over port 7331, when the HTML5 remote console for virtual machines is launched.

The issue occurs when port 7343 is blocked on the system where you are running the vSphere Web Client

Resolution

To resolve the issue, ensure that the port 7343 is open on the system where you are running the vSphere Web Client.
