Issue/Introduction

The amount of historical data displayed in a chart depends on the collection interval and the statistics level that are set for vCenter Server.

As part of the performance improvements in vSphere 6.0, some cluster and resource pool metrics that are displayed in performance charts are stored in a more efficient way so that they are loaded and displayed faster. Unless vCenter Server is set to collect level 4 statistics this might result in missing level 2 and level 3 cluster and resource pool statistics for past historic periods after you perform an upgrade to vSphere 6.0. These statistics are not affected for future periods.

The affected cluster and resource pool metrics include:

  • CPU MHz
  • Memory Consumed
  • Memory Swap Used
  • Memory Balloon
  • Memory Granted
  • Memory Active

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 6.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0

Resolution

Before you upgrade from vSphere 5.5 to vSphere 6.0, increase the statistics levels of your vCenter Server to stat level 4.
Note: Collecting level 4 statistics for prolonged periods of time is not recommended. After you complete the upgrade, switch back to lower collection levels. For more information see Slow vCenter Server performance after increasing the performance data statistics collection level to more than 2 (2003885).
  1. In a Web browser log in to vSphere Web Client as a user with Performance.ModifyIntervals privilege.
  2. Navigate to a vCenter Server instance.
  3. Click the Manage tab.
  4. Under Settings, select General.
  5. Click Edit.
  6. Click Statistics.
  7. In the Interval Duration column, locate the settings for collecting statistics for an interval of 1 day.
  8. Set the statistics level to Level 4.
  9. Click OK.
You have changed the statistics levels of your vCenter Server 5.5. You will see all statistic levels after you upgrade to vSphere 6.0.
