Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
Upgrading VMware ESX 4.1 to ESXi 5.x results in these symptoms:
    • Virtual machines on local datastore are no longer inaccessible.
    • From the vSphere Client, you can see the datastore in the Storage section, but cannot access the virtual machines.
    • Executing a vmkfstools -P /vmfs/volumes/<datastore> against the datastore reports this message:

One or more partitions spanned by this volume may be offline

    • In the vmkernel.log (located at /var/log) on the affected host, you see entries similar to these:

      • 2012-04-27T02:37:24.340Z cpu0:2610)LVM: 11729: Some trailing extents missing (1609, 2703)

      • 2012-04-27T02:37:31.568Z cpu3:2795)WARNING: LVM: 13178: An attached device went offline. (null) file system [vmhost1:storage1, 47985d0b-41b4dd0a-6c64-001f29c36fd8]

    Environment

    VMware ESX 4.1.x
    VMware ESX 4.0.x
    VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
    VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0

    Cause

    This issue occurs when:
    • ESX 4.x has a local datastore that is expanded using the vSphere client by clicking Datastore Properties > Increase.
    • ESX 4.1 is upgraded to ESXi 5.x.
Datastore extents within Extended and Logical partitions on a Local or Boot storage device cannot be grown into adjacent space using the vSphere Client. This is the default layout for an ESX 4.x installation.

If the local datastore was expanded in the past using the vSphere client, the ESX 4.x host is susceptible to this issue after upgrading to ESXi 5.x

    Resolution

    This issue is resolved in:

Before upgrading to From ESX 4.x to ESXi 5.x, use one of the installation medias. If you have an ESX 4.x that has a local datastore with extents:
    • Perform a complete backup of your virtual machines prior to upgrading to ESXi 5.0.
    • Contact VMware Support prior to upgrading to ESXi 5.x.
