This article provides the procedure to change the vSphere Data Protection (VDP) appliance password.
You may want to use this procedure if:
  • You want to change the VDP appliance password.
  • You do not know the password for the VDP appliance SUSE Linux operating system
  • You know the password, but the log in attempt fails even when you use the correct password.

Note: This issue may occur if the password includes a character with an umlaut, such as ü, ö, and ä.

The default username/password for a VDP appliance is root/ changeme.

To change the password, log in to the VDP appliance and run this command:

If the password is not known or does not work:
  1. Reboot the VDP appliance.

  2. Stop at the GRUB prompt by pressing the space bar and choose e for edit.

  3. For the boot options, type init=/bin/bash, so that it does not prompt for a password during boot. Exit the editor and continue the boot.

  4. After the boot completes, you see the root prompt. Use the passwd command to set the password back to the default changeme password.

  5. Reboot the VDP appliance and run this command to set the desired password:

  • Changing the VDP password can also be done from the vdp-configure wizard.
  • This process is not supported as of VMware vSphere Data Protection version 5.8 and later.

Additional Information

For more information, see Using VDP-Configure section in the vSphere Data Protection Administration Guide and VMware vSphere Data Protection Documentation.
You may need to delay the boot process to allow you time to display the GRUB menu. One can increase the power-on Boot delay in Edit Settings for the VDP appliance:
  1. Highlight the virtual machine.
  2. Right-click and select Edit Settings.
  3. Click the Options tab and select Boot Options.
  4. Increase the Power On Boot Delay value, as required.
