Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Hotadd of RDMs either directly or during a backup to a VM that is on Object storage (VSAN/VVOL) fails during reconfigure phase.
  • In the vpxd.log file, you see entries similar to:
<YYY-MM-DD><time> error vpxd[7F6B062AF700] [Originator@6876 sub=pbm opID=12bf1ba8] PBMCallback: PreProvisionProcess: PreProvisionProcess failed with : Error when trying to run pre-provision validation

  • In the sps.log file, you see entries similar to:

<YYY-MM-DD><time> [pool-21-thread-20] WARN opId=12bf1ba8 com.vmware.pbm.prov.impl.PreProvisionServiceImpl - Error when trying to run pre-provision validation

Environment

VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 6.5.x

Cause

SPBM expects backingObjectId for any entities on Object Storage (like vSAN and VVOL).
This issue occurs as backingObjectId will not be set for a RDM.

Resolution

This is a known issue in vSphere 6.5.
Currently, there is no resolution.

Workaround:
To workaround this issue, RDM can be hot added by directly connecting to ESXi host which covers both backup as well as adding an RDM to a Virtual Machine.
