Unable to start vSphere Web Client service after upgrading to vCenter Server 5.5 Update 3

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

After upgrading to vCenter Server 5.5 Update 3, you experience these symptoms:

  • Failed to start vSphere Web Client.
  • If you manually start the vSphere Web Client Service, the service runs for a while and then stops automatically.


Environment

VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x

Cause

This issue may occur if some temporary files are not removed during the upgrade.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, remove the work folder manually.

Caution: Take a backup of the work folder before proceeding.

For vCenter Server:
  1. Stop the vSphere Web Client Service. For more information, see Stopping, starting, or restarting VMware vCenter Server services (1003895).
  2. Delete the work folder from this location:

    C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\vSphereWebClient\server\work
     
  3. Start the vSphere Web Client Service. For more information, see Stopping, starting, or restarting VMware vCenter Server services (1003895).
     
For vCenter Server Appliance:
  1. Connect to the vCenter Server Appliance using SSH.
  2. Stop the vSphere Web Client Service. For more information, See Stopping, starting, or restarting vCenter Server Appliance services (2054085).
  3. Run this command to remove work directory.

    rm -rf /usr/lib/vmware-vsphere-client/server/work
     
  4. Start the vSphere Web Client Service. For more information, see Stopping, starting, or restarting vCenter Server Appliance services (2054085).
