Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Performing vMotion of a virtual machine fails.
• You see the error:
  
  Failed to write checkpoint data (offset 75485184, size 16384): Limit exceeded.
  
  
• This issue occurs usually at the end of vMotion.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5

Cause

During vMotion, on the destination host a buffer called checkpoint buffer is allocated to store the checkpoint data of the virtual machine. This issue occurs if the actual size of the checkpoint data to be stored exceeds the size of the checkpoint buffer. This happens if there are any changes in the virtual machine's SVGA and Frame buffer sizes during vMotion operation.

Resolution

To work around this issue, see the Resolution section in the vMotion of a virtual machine fails with the error: A general system error occurred: Failed to flush checkpoint data! (2005741).

If the problem still persists, contact VMware technical support after collecting the support bundles from the ESXi servers involved in the vMotion operation.
