Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • When uploading or downloading in vCloud Director prompts you to install the Client Integration plugin, even when it is installed.
  • Unable to upload or download in Google Chrome.
  • You see the warning message:

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 6.0.x

Cause

This issue occurs when:
  • Chrome does not support Certificates that do not contain a Subject Alt Name, the default certificate for the Client Integration plugin do not contain a SAN and so the CIP is not loaded.
  • Mozilla and Google have both recently made changes which impact the support for the Client Integration Plugin.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting VMware vCenter Server 6.0.
Currently there is no resolution.
To work around this issue:
For MAC Users
Note: This step for Chrome on Mac ignores all certificate warnings and may introduce security vulnerabilities in the environment.
Run this command in terminal after closing the Chrome (Chrome version 58.0.3029.110 (64-bit)) on a Mac:

/Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google\ Chrome --ignore-certificate-errors
Note: This reopens Chrome with a security warning, and allows the CIP to operate as normal again.
For Windows users
  • Chrome
    1. Uninstall the Client Integration Plugin 5.6.0 from the Programs and Features in control panel.
    2. Download the 2150215_csd-openssl.zip file attached to this article.
    3. Extract the 2150215_csd-openssl.zip file and copy the csd-openssl.cfg file to these locations.

Note: If the locations do not exist, create them.

      C:\ProgramData\VMware\CIP\csd\ssl\csd-openssl.cfg
      C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\Client Integration Plug-in 5.6\csd-openssl.cfg

    4. Install the Client Integration plugin from the exe downloaded from the vCenter Server login page.
    5. In the Settings, click SSL > Manage Certificates > Trusted Root Certification Authorities Tab > Import > Browse.
    6. Select All Files and click C:\ProgramData\VMware\CIP\csd\ssl\cert.der to import the cert.
    7. Close and re-open Chrome and test the iso upload.
  • Firefox
    • Use the Extended Support FireFox https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/.

Note: You need Firefox ESR version 52 or below to modify the flag plugin.load _flash_only. This flag is removed in Firefox 53+.
  • Internet Explorer
    • Enable compatibility mode
    • Add the vCloud Director FQDN to the trusted sites
Notes:
  • The Microsoft Edge browser is not supported.
  • Ensure browsers are closed and reopened so the additional changes are picked up.
