Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • Custom display resolution in a virtual machine is not preserved after restarting a virtual machine
  • Virtual machine resets the custom display resolution of after switching between single display and full screen mode
  • Custom display resolution in a virtual machine is lost while switching screens between the Mac and the virtual machine

Environment

VMware Fusion 10.x
VMware Fusion Pro 10.x
VMware Fusion Pro 8.x
VMware Fusion 8.x

Cause

This is default behavior of VMware Fusion to resizes the display screen to fit the screen size. The display setting of the guest operating system is not preserved when the resolution is changed manually within the virtual machine.

Resolution

To retain the custom resolution of the virtual machine, set the Single Window and Full Screen options for the virtual machine resolution in the Virtual Machine Display settings to Stretch the virtual machine in the window.

  1. In the Fusion menu, go to Virtual Machine > Settings > Display.
  2. Under Virtual Machine Resolution, locate Single Window
  3. Select Stretch the virtual machine in the Window.
  4. Under Virtual Machine Resolution, locate Full Screen
  5. Select Stretch the virtual machine in the Screen.
  6. Close Settings.
