Issue/Introduction

Upgrading to ESX/ESXi 4.1 Patch 04 (Build: 582267) resolves this issue.

Symptoms:
  • Under the Hardware Status section in the vSphere Client, you see the alert:

Battery on Controller NN (Health State Not Good): Alert: Battery Status: Fully Charged

  • The server has an LSI Logic-based SCSI or RAID controller, such as the ServeRAID or MegaRAID controller.
  • It may also be true that:

    • The battery attached to the LSI Logic-based SCSI or RAID controller was recently replaced
    • The new battery model is LSI iBBU08.

Environment

VMware ESXi 4.1.x Installable
VMware ESX 4.1.x
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Embedded

Cause

This issue occurs after replacing the battery attached to an LSI Logic-based SCSI or RAID controller.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting ESX/ESXi 4.1. This results in a spurious alert but does not impact storage functionality.

This issue is resolved in ESX/ESXi 4.1 Patch 04 (Build: 582267), available at VMware Download Patches page.

Notes:

  • Some Battery Backup Unit (BBU) types, such as SuperCap, are not supported by ESX/ESXi 4.1 Patch 04. SuperCap is currently supported in ESXi 5.0 with the SMIS Provider (Version 00.34.V0.01).
  • ( 0x6- TMCC) is not defined in storelib, which is why it is reported as UNKNOWN.
