Issue/Introduction

Attempts to upgrade Update Manager 5.0 to Update Manager 5.1 on a Windows Server 2008 Datacenter 64-bit R2 SP1 system fail. The installer rolls back and displays the following message A general system error occurred: solution is not responding.

Environment

VMware vCenter Update Manager 5.1.x

Resolution

This issue occurs when the automatic cleanup of Update Manager files from the system on which Update Manager runs is incomplete. To resolve this issue, manually remove the related keys from the system registry.

To perform manual clean-up, perform one the following:

Solution 1
  1. Click Start > Run, type regedit, and click OK. The Registry Editor window opens.
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services.
  3. Delete the vstor2-vci10 key.
  4. Reboot the operating system.

Solution 2
  1. Click Start > Run, type regedit, and click OK. The Registry Editor window opens.
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services.
  3. Delete \??\ from the ImagePath of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\vstor2-vci10 key.
    The ImagePath displays as:
    \??\C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\Infrastructure\Update Manager\vstor2-vci10.sys
  4. Reboot the operating system.
