Issue/Introduction

  • Taking a snapshot of a virtual machine that is powered on and has virtual disks configured as independent, non-persistent disks fails
  • You see an error similar to:

    Failed to resume virtual disk scsi0:0:The disk has been modified since you took a snapshot or suspended the virtual machine. Error encountered while restarting virtual machine after taking snapshot. The virtual machine will be powered off.


Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
VMware ESX Server 3.0.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0

Resolution

This is a known issue in ESX 3.0 and ESXi 5.x.
This issue is resolved in the patch release for ESX 3.0.2. For more information see, ESX Server 3.0.2, Patch ESX-1003524: Updates to VMware-esx-vmkernel, VMware-esx-vmx, and VMware-esx-apps (1003524).
This issue is resolved in ESXi 5.1 Update 2, available at VMware Downloads.
