Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Cannot connect VMware vCenter Server Appliance to an Active Directory domain.
  • Connecting VMware vCenter Server Appliance to an Active Directory domain fails.
  • You see the error:

    Error: Lsass Error [code 0x0000000b]

    The OU format is invalid.

     


Environment

VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.5.x
VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.1.x

Cause

This issue occurs when the NetBIOS name for the Active Directory domain contains lowercase characters.

Note: By default, while creating an Active Directory domain using DCPROMO on Windows 2003 and later, you can only create a NetBIOS domain name using uppercase characters.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting the VMware vCenter Server Appliance versions 5.1 and 5.5.
