Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Selecting the power off option shuts down virtual machines within a vApp
  • When you right-click the vApp and click Shutdown, the virtual machines within the vApp power off

    Environment

    VMware vCenter Server 4.1.x
    VMware vCenter Server 4.0.x
    VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x

    Cause

This issue occurs when the configured Shutdown Action set with in the vApp is not privileged to shut down the vApp. This issue does not occur when you choose to the Power Off the vApp.

    Resolution

This is a known issue affecting vCenter Server 4.x and 5.0.

    Currently, there is no resolution.

    To workaround this issue:
    1. Review the Shutdown Actions configured for the virtual machines in the vApp.
    2. Right-click the vApp and click Edit Settings.
    3. Click the Start Order tab.
    4. Click the virtual machine under each Group.
    5. Verify that the Shutdown Action is set correctly for the virtual machine.

Note: This action provides privilege to Power Off the vApp. Do not use the right-click Shut Down as this ignores the configured Shutdown Action.

    6. Click OK.
