Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Running the Get-TagCategory PowerCLI command fails with the error:
Cannot find a service registration for vCenter service with host name hostname
  • Other PowerCLI commands run without any issue.


Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.1.x
VMware vCenter Server 6.0.x

Cause

This issue occurs due to an incorrect information in the vCenter Server Administrator Settings. It also occurs after changing the vCenter Server name or FQDN.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, ensure that correct vCenter Server FQDN is entered in the advanced settings.

To change FQDN of the vCenter Server in advanced settings:

Note: Before running these steps verify that the FQDN can be resolved from the machine running PowerCLI commands.
  1. Log in to the vSphere Client.
  2. Go to Administration > vCenter Server Settings > Advanced Settings.
  3. Scroll down to find the vCenter Server FQDN entry and enter the full FQDN of the vCenter Server.
  4. Click OK
