Issue/Introduction

  • Performing a physical to virtual conversion of a Windows Server 2008 R2 system fails.
    • You see an error similar to:

      Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code: 2147754767 (0x8004230F).
  • In the C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\logs vmware-converter-worker-#.log file, you see entries similar to:

Cause

This issue occurs because the Volume Shadow Copy Server (VSS) fails in Windows when the Windows Server Backup feature is not installed.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, add the Windows Server Backup Features feature to Windows.
 
To add the Windows Server Backup Features feature to Windows, use one of these options:
  • Add the feature using the command line:
    1. Open an elevated command prompt on the system failing the conversion. For more information, see Opening a command or shell prompt (1003892).
    2. Type ocsetup WindowsServerBackup then Press Enter.
  • Add the feature using Server Manager:
    1. Click Start then click Server Manager.
    2. In Features Summary, click Add Features.
    3. In the list of features, double-click Windows Server Backup Features then click Windows Server Backup > Command-line tools > Next.
    4. If Windows PowerShell is not installed, click Add Required Features > Next.
    5. Click Install on the Confirmation Installation Selections page.
    6. Click Close.
