Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • vSphere Update Manager fails to scan an ESXI host when updating from 5.1 to 5.5 and is using the VIB:

    Dell_bootbank_OpenManage_7.4-0000

  • vSphere Update Manager reports the error:

Host returns ESX error code 99, unhandled exception has occurred

  • In the /var/log/vua.log on the ESXi host, you see the error:

WARNING:root:Couldn't load esximage database: Cannot merge VIBs Dell_bootbank_OpenManage_7.4-0000, Dell_bootbank_OpenManage_7.4-0000 with unequal filelist attributes

Environment

VMware vCenter Update Manager 5.5.x
VMware vCenter Update Manager 6.0.x

Cause

This issue occurs when two VIBs use the same vSphere Update Manager (VUM) identifier or bulletin ID (type, name, vendor, version) with different attributes or payload. It has been identified that the following DELL vib for OpenManage has a duplicate name in vSphere 5.5:
  • Dell_bootbank_OpenManage_7.4-0000

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use one of these options:
  • Remove the Dell OpenManage VIB from the ESXi host before upgrading.
  • Engage Dell for a different OpenManage VIB for the vSphere 5.5 environment
