Issue/Introduction

This article provides information on how multiple data collectors perform in a vCenter Chargeback Manager environment.

Environment

VMware vCenter Chargeback Manager 2.0.x

Resolution

Multiple vCenter and vCloud data collectors can be deployed for a given chargeback instance. For more information on installing multiple data collectors, see the Chargeback Installation and Upgrade Guide.

Irrespective of whether the additional data collectors are on the same host as vCenter Chargeback Manager or on a stand alone host, while configuring them, you must ensure that all of them reference the same, single vCenter Chargeback Manager database.

When there are multiple vCenter Data Collectors deployed, the data collectors work together to share the load. If a data collector goes down, the other data collector(s) continue to work and take on the extra load.

When there are multiple vCloud Data collectors deployed, one data collector is the primary/active data collector which collects all the vCloud data. Any subsequent collectors that are deployed are in the passive mode until the primary/active data collector fails.

When there are multiple vShield Data collectors deployed, one data collector is the primary/active data collector which collects all the vShield data. Any subsequent collectors that are deployed are in the passive mode until the primary/active data collector fails.
