Issue/Introduction

  • You receive these messages when creating a high availability (HA) configuration using the command line interface:

WARNING: UWVMKSyscall: 2715: Inheriting initial fds failed: Would block
WARNING: UserSocketInet: 544: waiters list not empty!

  • Agent processes fail to start causing the HA configuration to fail.

Environment

VMware ESX Server 3.5.x
VMware Infrastructure SDK 2.0.x

Resolution

This issue is caused due to the poll()vmkernel service incorrectly calling world on a waiters list even when polling a file that is in a non-blocking mode. A cleanup routine later warns about this inconsistency.

Receiving these warning messages while trying to configure HA through the command line, is a known issue for ESX Server 3i, version 3.5 Update 1. Upgrade to ESX 3.5 Update 5 to resolve this issue. You can download this update from the VMware download page.
If you receive these messages in any other scenario contact VMware support. For more information, see How to submit a support request.
