Issue/Introduction

This article details how to recover a lost embedded Site Recovery Manager (SRM) DB password in Windows.

Symptoms:

  • Forgotten SRM (Embedded) DB password
  • Lost SRM (Embedded) DB password

Environment

VMware Site Recovery Manager 6.x
VMware Site Recovery Manager 8.1.x

Resolution

Use these steps to extract the password and username for the SRM Embedded database:

Note: This only works with the SRM embedded database (vPostgres). Also, the information can only be found in the user account that was primarily used to deploy SRM (administrator.ST in this case). You can find this information from the registry.

To extract the paswword

Navigate to C:\Users\administrator.ST\AppData\Roaming\postgresql to find the password in the pgpass.conf file:

localhost:5678:srm_db:srm:example@2010 -> Password
127.0.0.1:5678:srm_db:srm:VDOT@2010
localhost:5678:postgres:postgres:FCFtD1FpPsS7FV%T
127.0.0.1:5678:postgres:postgres:FCFtD1FpPsS7FV%T

To identify the right user account

  1. Log in to the Windows registry by running the regedit command.
  2. Navigate to the location : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.\Vmware vCenter Site Recovery Manager
  3. The ServiceAccountName key will show you the right username you should be looking for. See the screenshot below for reference
