Windows Server 2012 not listed in guest operating system list in ESXi or vCenter Server 5.0 Update 1

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
On a vCenter Server 5.0 Update 1 or ESXi 5.0 Update 1 system, you experience these issues:

• When creating a new virtual machine system from the vSphere Client or vSphere Web Client, Microsoft Windows Server 2012 is not listed listed in guest operating system list.
• When creating a new virtual machine system from the vSphere Client or vSphere Web Client, only Windows 8 Server is available.
• When a new virtual machine is created using the Windows 8 Server guest operating system selection, the system fails to boot.

VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0

Resolution

This issue is resolved in:

• vCenter Server 5.0 Update 2. For more information, see the VMware vCenter Server 5.0 Update 2 Release Notes. You can download the latest release of vCenter Server from VMware Downloads.
• ESXi 5.0 Update 2. For more information, see the ESXi 5.0 Update 2 Release Notes. You can download the latest release of vCenter Server from VMware Downloads.

Note: If the ESXi 5.0 host is managed by vCenter Server 5.0, both vCenter Server and ESXi host must be updated to Update 2. If the ESXi host is standalone, only the host must be updated to Update 2. While vCenter Server 5.0 Update 1 can administer ESXi 5.0 Update 2 hosts which will allow for the creation of Windows Server 2012 virtual machines via the ESXi host, best practice is to maintain vCenter Server at or above the version level of the ESXi hosts.
