Network TX and RX transfer rate performance statistics for virtual machines are reversed in vSphere 5.5

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

When viewing performance statistics for specific virtual machines using the vSphere Client or vSphere Web Client, you experience these symptoms:

• Network TX and RX transfer rate performance statistics for vmnic adapters appear to be reversed.
• When traffic is being received on a virtual machine, it reports that the vmnic associated with it is transmitting instead of receiving and vice-versa.
  
• Network TX and RX transfer rate performance for other objects in the same virtual machine view appear to be correct. Only the vmnic statistics are reversed.
  
• The view appears correct when viewing vmnic TX and RX transfer rate performance statistics for the ESXi host instead of individual virtual machine.
  
• ESXi 5.1 and older hosts do not display this TX/RX vmnic performance statistic reversal.
• The views remain consistent when viewing performance charts connecting directly to the ESXi host using the vSphere Client, and when connecting to vCenter Server.
  

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5

Cause

This issue occurs due to some changes in ESXi 5.5. Because of this, the vmnic RX and TX performance statistics are inadvertently reversed for virtual machines. This may impact views in both the normal ESXi and vCenter Server performance charts, as well as in some other monitoring tools, such as vRealize Operations (formerly known as vCenter Operations), and other third-party tools that rely on this performance data from ESXi.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting VMware ESXi 5.5. Currently, there is no resolution or a workaround.
