Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

After upgrading or installing vCenter Server 5.5, you experience these symptoms:

  • Storage DRS clusters are not balanced
  • Storage DRS clusters configured for Fully Automated mode fail to re-balance.
  • When you review the Storage DRS recommendations for Storage vMotion, datastores with enough disk space available display:

    InsufficientDisk Space on Datastore
  • The vpxd.logs (located at: C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\Logs) contain entries similar to:
  • YYYY-MM-DDT<time> [03460 verbose 'drmLogger'] [Drm] MapVmSingle: vms :
YYYY-MM-DDT<time>[03460 verbose 'drmLogger'] [Drm] New Virtual Machine:Disk-48, foundHost none

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5
VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x

Cause

This issue occurs when an available disk space for Storage vMotion tasks is incorrectly calculated during the migration of storage arrays utilizing the data deduplication feature. Storage vMotion tasks are also incorrectly calculated when migrating to datastores utilizing RDMs.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in VMware vCenter Server 5.5.0b, available at VMware Downloads.
For more information, see the vCenter Server 5.5.0b Release Notes.
