Issue/Introduction

An NVMe device does not appear on the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) list of bootable devices when an ESXi 6.0 image has been installed on the device. This happens because the ESXi installer does not create a UEFI boot option in the system's NVRAM and does not make this option default. As a result, the ESXi host cannot boot from the NVMe device.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 6.0.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0

Resolution

To resolve this problem, you generally follow these steps.
  1. Select Boot Maintenance Manager.
  2. Select Add Boot Option and select the ESXi on NVMe device.
  3. Select Change Boot Order and select the new boot option to boot first.
Exact options and details depend on how the platform vendors customize the UI of their UEFI firmware.
