This issue happens when the virtualdev parameter is missing from the .vmx file.
To add the virtualdev parameter to the .vmx file:
  1. Connect to the service console as root.
  2. Open the .vmx file of the affected virtual machine in a text editor.
  3. Add one of the following lines, depending on the required type:

    For Windows 2003, 2008, Vista, Linux

    scsi0.virtualDev = "lsilogic"

    For Windows NT, 2000, XP

    scsi0.virtualDev = "buslogic"

  4. Save the file.
