Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • The summary tab of an ESXi host displays the error:

    No vmkcore disk partition available

  • When you run the esxcli system coredump partition list command from an SSH session connected to the ESXi host displays false under the Active state.

    For example:

    Name Path Active Configured
    --------------------- -----------------------------------------
    ------ ----------
    mpx.vmhba1:C0:T0:L0:7 /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.ID false true

    Notes:

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1

Cause

This issue occurs when the coredump partition is not enabled.

Resolution

Apply these steps if Configured is listed as true after running the command:

esxcli system coredump partition list

To resolve this issue, set the coredump partition to active.

To set the coredump partition to active:
  1. Connect to the ESXi host through an SSH session. For more information, see Using ESXi Shell in ESXi 5.x (2004746).
  2. Run this command to set the coredump partition to active:

esxcli system coredump partition set --enable true
