Issue/Introduction

This article gives you the changes between version ESXi 5.0, 5.1 and 5.5 in enabling virtual machine logging.

Symptoms:
  • Enabling or disabling virtual machine logging while the virtual machine is powered on fails
  • You see the error:

    The attempted operation cannot be performed in the current state (Powered on)


Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5

Cause

This issue occurs due to the Enable logging option while the virtual machine is powered on being deprecated in VMware vSphere 5.1.x, 5.5.x and 6.0.x.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, configure the enable logging option while the virtual machine is powered off.

To configure the enable logging option:
  1. Using the VMware vSphere Client, power off the virtual machine.
  2. Right click the virtual machine and click Edit Settings.
  3. Select the Options tab.
  4. Click Advanced > General.
  5. Under Settings, select the Enable logging option. De-select the Enable logging option to disable.
  6. Power on the virtual machine.
