Issue/Introduction

  • Windows virtual machine does not recognize the VMXNET3 virtual adapter with a Multicast MAC address.
  • In the Windows Event Viewer, you see a message similar to:

    This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Environment

  • VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
  • VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5
  • VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0

Cause

This issue occurs because VMXNET3 drivers do not support Multicast MAC addresses.

Resolution

Use a non-Multicast MAC address.
