Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • You cannot exit maintenance mode for a VSA appliance
  • After entering maintenance mode for one of your VSA appliances and performing a maintenance task on the ESX host where the VSA appliance is running (such as adding NICs or applying patches) and rebooting the ESX host, you cannot exit maintenance mode.
  • After connecting the ESX host back to vCenter Server and exiting maintenance mode on the host, if you right-click on the VSA Appliance in the Appliances view on the VSA Manager tab, the only option is Replace Appliance.

Environment

VMware vSphere Storage Appliance 1.0.x

Resolution

This is a known issue.
To workaround the issue and exit maintenance mode:
  1. In the vCenter Server Hosts and Clusters view, power on the VSA appliance.
  2. Open a command line window as Administrator on the vCenter Server, and run:

    cd \
    cd "Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\VSA Manager\tools"
    “C:Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\jre\bin\java.exe” -jar WSCLI.jar VSA-IP shutdownSvaServer true

Where VSA-IP is the IP address listed under the Mgmt Address column of the affected VSA appliance from the Appliances view in the VSA Manager tab of vCenter Server.

After a few moments, the VSA appliance powers off.

  3. In the vCenter Hosts and Clusters view, power on the VSA appliance.
  4. After a few moments, refresh the view in the VSA Manager tab. The appliance now shows as in maintenance mode.
  5. Right-click the VSA appliance and select Exit Appliance Maintenance Mode. The appliance exits maintenance mode.

After a few moments, VSA Storage Data synchronization tasks appear in the Recent Tasks window of vCenter Server. When those tasks are complete, the VSA appliance shows as Online and in the Datastores view, the VSADs-0 show as Online.
