Storage controller firmware versions are different between esxcli command and VCG/iLO

Issue/Introduction

This articles provides information on storage controller firmware version mismatch between iLO/VCG and esxcli command.

Symptoms:
Storage controller/HBA the firmware versions shown in the iLO/VCG and that shown in the esxcli command output are mismatched. 

For example:
For HBA330 Mini firmware, the iLO/VCG shows 16.17.00.05 but the esxcli command output shows *16.00.08.00* (cmd: esxcli storage san sas list)

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.0.x

Cause

The interface iLO is using is providing the Firmware Package Version whereas driver is providing Firmware Version. This causes a mismatch between the iLO and esxcli command output.

This is a display discrepancy and will not cause issues.

Resolution

There is no resolution.
