Resolution

Validate that each troubleshooting step below is true for your environment. The steps will provide instructions or a link to a document, for validating the step and taking corrective action as necessary. The steps are ordered in the most appropriate sequence to isolate the issue and identify the proper resolution. Please do not skip a step

  1. Execute the data collection task you are trying to complete on the affected target server.
  2. Observe the results in the dialog and compare to the issues listed below.

Inventory Collection

  1. Verify Inventory Collection completes successfully. For more information, see Inventory Collection appears to complete successfully but no data is recorded (1374585) .
  2. Verify a WMI error is not preventing inventory collection. For more information, see:
  3. Verify the software buffer in WMI is not out of memory. For more information, see "Out of Memory" error when running Inventory (1002194) .

Inventory and Performance Collection

  1. Verify data collection is not failing due to service start failure or Service Control Manager failure. For more information, see Data Collection fails with the error "The service has not been started. (2184)" (1004085) .
  2. Verify data collection is not failing on a Windows NT server when the IRP stack buffer is too small. For more information, see Data Collection fails with error "Not enough server storage is available to process this command" on Windows NT (753942) .

Performance Collection

  1. Verify it is not an improperly registered performance library causing performance collection failure. For more information, see Performance Collection fails with a performance library trust error (1004149) .
  2. Verify a disabled paging file on Windows XP is not preventing complete performance collection. For more information, see Performance Collection on Windows XP systems may not gather Processor or Memory Metrics which are required for Consolidation Scenarios (4573683).

Test Connection

  1. Ensure a remote registry failure is not preventing test connection. For more information, see Test Connection fails both Remote Registry and Perfmon tests (1002328) .
