Troubleshooting VMware Capacity Planner when the data collection is slow

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Data collection proceeds to run however it performs slowly
  • Performance data collection does not complete within 60 minutes
  • The data collection task times out without completing all the systems
  • You may receive the error:

    Bad query status (258) PDH Returned - The wait operation timed out.(258)


Environment

VMware Capacity Planner 2.6.x
VMware Capacity Planner 2.5.x

Resolution

Validate that each troubleshooting step below is true for your environment. The steps will provide instructions or a link to a document, for validating the step and taking corrective action as necessary. The steps are ordered in the most appropriate sequence to isolate the issue and identify the proper resolution. Please do not skip a step.
  1. Determine you collection strategy. The Collector's collection performance is often limited by the speed and responsiveness of the network and the target servers. A well-developed collection strategy can improve collection performance significantly. For more information, see Developing a collection strategy based on network topology (1005694).
  2. Verify that there is enough resources on the host server to run the data collection effectively and that the slow performance is not being caused by insufficient resources. For more information, see Monitoring system resources for Collector tasks (1005525).
