Issue/Introduction

Windows update is failing for some Microsoft patches I have downloaded. What is wrong?


Environment

VMware Workstation 4.x (Windows)
VMware Workstation 4.x (Linux)

Resolution

This can happen if folder sharing is enabled in your Windows XP or Windows 2000 guest operating system. Please take the following steps to disable the VMware Tools service in your Windows guest:
  1. Launch the Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Administrative Tools, then Services.
  3. Right-click VMware Tools Services and select Stop.
  4. Install the security patches.
  5. Restart VMware Tools Services. (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Start)
