Issue/Introduction

vCloud Director’s Virtual Machine Remote Console (VMRC) functionality provides you the ability to mount a CD-ROM or ISO. While this functionality cannot be directly replicated using vRealize Automation (formerly known as VMware vCloud Automation Center,) vRealize Orchestrator (formerly known as vCenter Orchestrator) can be used to accomplish a similar effect.

This functionality allows you to deploy an empty virtual machine or to mount an ISO to deploy an OS or application to a virtual machine.

Resolution

To mount a CD-ROM using the VMware vRealize Automation (formerly known as VMware vCloud Automation Center) using vRealize Orchestrator:
  1. Use the Add CD-ROM workflow in the vRealize Orchestrator plug-in.
  2. Go to Add a new Action.
  3. Browse the vRealize Orchestrator workflow tree for the CD-ROM workflow.

Prerequisites to use a CD-ROM for OS Install using the vRealize Orchestrator Plugin

  • The BIOS option to start from the CD-ROM drive must be enabled in the virtual machine template. If the template is not configured to start from the CD-ROM by default, you can change that in a workflow. For more information, see Force a VM to start from several devices.
  • The CD-ROM must have an automated install on it. You should ensure the BIOS boot setting is configured to start from the CD-ROM before starting from hard disk so the virtual machine starts from the CD-ROM.
