Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Custom roles do not work properly in the vSphere Web Client
  • vSphere Web Client reports errors when users assigned with custom role perform an operation
  • This issue does not occur in the vSphere Client
  • You see the error:

    This action is not available for any of the selected objects at this time


Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.1.x

Cause

This issue occurs due to change in the behavior of the vSphere Web Client. To be able to perform the power and other operations in the vSphere Web Client, the user must be granted with the LogEvent permission under the Global section.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting VMware vCenter Server 5.1.x and ESXi 5.5.x.

This issue is resolved in vCenter Server 5.5 Update 3. For more information, see VMware vCenter Server 5.5 Update 3 Release Notes. Download the latest version available at at VMware Downloads.

To work around this issue, the user must be ensured with the LogEvent permission under the Global section in the vSphere Client:

  1. Using the vSphere Client, log in to vCenter Server as an administrator.
  2. Click Home > Roles.
  3. Right-click the Role and click Edit Role.
  4. Click Global and then click the LogEvent option.
  5. Click OK.
