Issue/Introduction

The purpose of this article is to provide the steps to upgrade vCenter Server versions 5.1.x, 5.5.x to 6.0.x by registering the source vCenter Server to a new 6.0.x Platform Service Controller configured in a different SSO domain.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 6.0.x

Resolution

Prerequisite

The vCenter Server must have administrative privileges for an AD user and the same user should be provided as the administrative user when upgrading the vCenter Server.

Upgrading an embedded vCenter Server 5.1.x, 5.5.x (local SQL express database) to 6.0.x (migrating to vPostgres) and registering to an external PSC
  1. Deploy an external PSC and configure as required (new SSO domain).
  2. Uninstall SSO from the existing vCenter.
  3. Stop the vCenter service.
  4. Edit the vpxd.cfg
    1. Set SSO to false.
    2. Modify the sso/admin, sso/groupcheck, and sso/sts URLs to reflect the new PSC.
  5. Start the vCenter services.
    1. Confirm you can login with an AD account using a VI client
  6. Run the 6.0 Installer
    1. Installation is now detected as vCenter with external SSO/PSC.
    2. The SSO url is detected as the external PSC.
    3. Enter the PSC/vSphere.local credentials defined during step 1.
  7. Once the installation is complete confirm login to the NGC with an AD account.
  8. Confirm the all existing tags, storage policies, roles, and permissions have been preserved.
