"Failed to uninstall product {1FBCB62E...}. Error: 1602" upgrading to vCenter Server 6.0

Issue/Introduction

To resolve the Failed to uninstall product {1FBCB62E-6178-455F-ADE2-07957D81A7D4}. Error: 1602 error when upgrading to vCenter Server 6.0.

Symptoms:

• Upgrading to vCenter Server 6.0 fails with the error:
  
  Failed to uninstall product {1FBCB62E-6178-455F-ADE2-07957D81A7D4}. Error: 1602
   
• In the %temp%\vminst.log file, you see entries similar to:

• In the %temp%\vcs-5x-uninstall-msi.log file, you see an entry similar to:
   
  CustomAction VM_CheckRunningClients returned actual error code 1602 (note this may not be 100% accurate if translation happened inside sandbox)
   

Note: The preceding log excerpts are only examples. Date, time, and environmental variables may vary depending on your environment.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 6.0.x

Cause

This issue occurs when the vCenter Server installer fails to detect the vpxclient process running in the background.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, end the vpxclient process running on the affected vCenter Server.

To end the vpxclient process:

1. Right-click the Windows taskbar on the vCenter Server host OS.
2. Select Task Manager.
3. In the Processes tab, search for the vpxclient process.
4. Select the vpxclient process.
5. Click End task.
6. Run the upgrade process again.
