Cannot start vCenter Server after applying a Windows patch

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Cannot start vCenter Server after applying or removing a Windows patch.
• Starting vCenter Server after applying or removing a Windows patch fails.
• You see the error:
  
  Windows could not start the VMware VirtualCenter Server Service on Local Computer. The service did not return an error. This could be an internal Windows error or an internal service error. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator.
  
  
• In the Event Viewer log, you see entries similar to:
  
  Event viewer, Error 1000, Application Error.
  -Faulting application name: vpxd.exe, version: 5.1.0.34460, time stamp: 0x50cfe94d
  -Faulting module name: vmacore.dll, version: 5.1.0.34460, time stamp: 0x50cfddac
  -Exception code: 0xc0000005

• The vpxd stops logging to the vpxd.log file.
  
  

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.1.x

Cause

This issue occurs when the vpxd.cfg file is corrupted.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, replace the vpxd.cfg file with its backup file. The backup file is located at C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\vpxd50fe3f62.cfg.

To replace the vpxd.cfg file with its backup file:

1. Rename C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\vpxd.cfg file to vpxd.cfg.old file.
2. Open the C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\vpxd50fe3f62.cfg file in the notepad and save as vpxd.cfg file.
   
   Note: Ensure to make a copy of the original file. Do not rename the original file.
   
   
3. Restart the VMware VirtualCenter Server service.
