All hosts are disconnected from vCenter Server after changing the DNS server

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • All the hosts appear as Disconnected/Not responding in vCenter Server after changing/removing the DNS Server
  • You are able to connect to the host directly using the vSphere Client or SSH
  • Running the NSlookup host name command reports the unknown server error and points to the old DNS Server IP address
  • In the vpxd.log file, you see entries similar to:

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 4.1.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x

Cause

This issue occurs if:
  • The DNS Server IP address is changed, but vCenter Server is pointing to the old DNS Server IP address in the TCP/IP settings
  • TCP/IP setting are configured with the incorrect IP address

Resolution

To resolve this issue, update the TCP/IP settings with the new/correct DNS Server IP.
To update the TCP/IP settings with the new/correct DNS Server IP in Windows 2008 and Windows 2008 R2:
  1. Go to Control Panel.
  2. Select Network and Sharing Center. If you are not able to see this option, click View by > Small icon.
  3. Click Change adapter setting/Manage network connection.
  4. Right-click Network Adapter and click Properties.
  5. Select the Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4) option.
  6. Click Properties.
  7. Update the DNS server IP address with the correct IP address.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Reconnect the host in vCenter Server.
