Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • The vusb0(Ethernet Over USB) device is displayed in the vSphere Client after disabling from BMC
  • Running esxcfg-nic -l or esxcli network nic list commands does not list vusb0

This issue can be seen with Lenovo XCC when these steps are followed:
  1. Login to https://BMC_IP.
  2. Go to XClarity Controller > BMC Configuration > Network > Ethernet Over USB, and then click the ”Disabled” button
Note: This is not hardware specific.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.7

Cause

This issue occurs due to the ESXi kernel not notifying the hostd service that vusb0 has been removed.

Resolution

Currently, there is no resolution.

Workaround:
  1. Connect to the ESXi with an ssh session and root credentials
  2. Run this command to restart hostd : /etc/init.d/hostd restart
Alternatively, the ESXi host can be restarted.
