Upgrading Platform Service Controller or vCenter Server Appliance 6.0 fails at 70%

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • During a patch update of your Platform Services Controller (PSC) or vCenter Server Appliance from 6.0, the task fails at [Started] Update Packages.
  • During the upgrade, you see the task for Update Packages sit at 70% and does not log anything further until reboot.
  • In the /var/log/vmware/applmgmt/software-packages.log file, you see these entries:

    [22710]DEBUG:task_manager:Opening file /etc/applmgmt/appliance/tasks.conf with lock
    [22710]DEBUG:task_manager:File /etc/applmgmt/appliance/tasks.conf locked
    [22710]DEBUG:task_manager:File /etc/applmgmt/appliance/tasks.conf unlocked
    [22710]DEBUG:task_manager:UpdateTask: status=running, percent=70, message=[Started] Update Packages
    [22710]DEBUG:task_manager:Opening file /etc/applmgmt/appliance/tasks.conf with lock
    [22710]DEBUG:task_manager:File /etc/applmgmt/appliance/tasks.conf locked
    [22710]DEBUG:task_manager:File /etc/applmgmt/appliance/tasks.conf unlocked
    [22710]DEBUG:vmware.vherd.base.software_update:Run command: ['/bin/rpm', '-Uhv', '/var/software-packages/*.rpm'].


    Note: The preceding log excerpts are only examples. Date, time, and environmental variables may vary depending on your environment.


Environment

VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.0.x

Cause

This issue occurs when IPv6 is disabled on the appliance which prevents the update from proceeding.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, enable IPV6 in vCenter Server Appliance before updating.
 
Note: Before enabling IPv6 in vCenter Server, roll back the failed upgrade because it does not rollback automatically.
